Decision to ban Awami League coming soon: Asif Mahmud
The current interim government is going to take steps soon to ban the Awami League as a political party, said Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives.

He made this statement in an interview with news agency BSS on Friday (February 7).

Claiming that a 'consensus' has been established between the people and political parties on banning the Awami League, Asif Mahmud said, it is very positive that a kind of 'consensus' is also being formed among political parties on banning the Awami League. The people of the country could not accept the undemocratic and stubborn attitude and activities of the then ruling party, so a 'consensus' was established among them before and after August 5 on banning the party. If such a consensus is formed among political parties, it will be easier for the government to implement any decision.

In response to a question at that time, the advisor said, "No matter who we are, whether we are ordinary people or political parties, we 'represent' the people of this country. As a result, our main goal should be to prioritize the aspirations and demands of the people after August 5. From that point of view, I would like to applaud the demand that has been raised by the BNP to ban the Awami League."

Regarding the process of banning the Awami League, he said, "In addition to the judicial process, there are four laws where the government can take action against any party through executive orders. However, the government has not yet decided what the legal framework will be."

Asif Mahmud said, the involvement of the autocratic Awami League in the July-August massacre should naturally be proven in the judicial process. In that case, the government can take any measure, including banning the Awami League as a party and canceling its registration. However, since the matter is related to the implementation of the law, the government will come to a final decision on banning the Awami League after following all the necessary procedures.

The advisor further said, "I want to assure you that the government will take immediate steps in this regard to reflect the wishes of the people of Bangladesh."
